Mr. Steven J. Gilbert was elected to the Board of Fairholme Funds, Inc. in 2014 and is Chairman of the Board of Directors Audit Committee.
Mr. Gilbert is Chairman of the Board of Gilbert Global Equity Partners, L.P., a billion dollar private equity fund. He is Vice Chairman of the Executive Board of MidOcean Equity Partners, LP, Co-Chairman of Birch Grove Capital, and until 2009, Senior Managing Director and Chairman of Sun Group (USA). From 1992 to 1997 he was the Founder and Managing General Partner of Soros Capital, L.P., the principal venture capital and leveraged transaction entity of the Quantum Group of Funds, and a principal Advisor to Quantum Industrial Holdings, Ltd.
From 1988 through 1992, he was the Managing Director of Commonwealth Capital Partners, L.P., a private equity investment firm.
From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Gilbert was the Managing General Partner of Chemical Venture Partners (now CCMP), which he founded. Mr. Gilbert has 45 years of experience in private equity investing, investment banking, and law. Mr. Gilbert was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar in 1970 and practiced law at Goodwin Procter & Hoar in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an associate in corporate finance at Morgan Stanley & Co. from 1972 to 1976, a Vice President at Wertheim & Co., Inc. from 1976 to 1978, and a Managing Director at E. F. Hutton International from 1978 to 1980.
Mr. Gilbert was the Chairman of the Board of Dura Automotive Systems, Inc., the largest independent designer and manufacturer of driver control systems, True Temper Sports, a manufacturer of golf shafts and precision sports equipment, and CPM Holdings, a manufacturer of process equipment used for oilseed processing and animal feed production, Co-Chairman of Stone Tower Capital Partners, a Director of J.O. Hambro Capital Management Group, and the Asian Infrastructure Fund. He is currently Chairman of TRI Pointe Homes, Inc. (TPH-NYSE), Lead Independent Director of The Empire State Realty Trust (ESRT-NYSE), a Director of Water Pik, Inc., a Director of Oaktree Capital Group (OAK-NYSE), and a Director of MBIA, Inc. (MBIA-NYSE).
Previously, Mr. Gilbert has been a Director of numerous companies, including Monteplier Re, Olympus Trust, Office Depot, Inc., Funk & Wagnalls, Inc., Parker Pen Limited, Piggly Wiggly Southern, Inc., Coast Community News, Inc., GTS-Duratek, Founder of The Asian Infrastructure Fund, Magnavox Electronic Systems Company, UroMed Corporation, Star City Casino Holdings, Ltd., Katz Media Corporation, Airport Group International, Batavia Investment Management, Ltd., Affinity Financial Group, Inc., ESAT Telecom, Ltd., Colep Holding, Ltd., NFO Worldwide, Terra Nova (Bermuda) Holdings, Limited, and Veritas-DCG. He was the principal owner, Chairman, and CEO of Lion’s Gate Films from 1980 to 1984. Mr. Gilbert has been involved as the managing principal in the purchase, financing, operations, and sale of over 170 businesses and infrastructure projects in the past 45 years.
Mr. Gilbert is a member of the Writer's Guild of America (East), the Council on Foreign Relations, the Global Agenda Council on Capital Flows of the World Economic Forum, the Gold Digest Course Ranking Panel, a Fellow of the Tribeca Disruptors Foundation, and was a 25 year Trustee of the New York University Langone Medical School, 10 years as a Member of the Undergraduate Board of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and is currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Lauder Institute. He received a B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania (1967), a J.D. from the Harvard Law School (1970), and a M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business.
